Walt Whitman

From Whitman's poem I Hear America Singing - why does the speaker say that each person 's singing should be "blithe and strong"?

If Whitman were alive today - what "songs" would he be hearing?

  1. He is saying that people shouldnt be ashamed of who they are, or what they do. They should be proud of themselves, and shouldn't hide it from the world.

If he were still alive he would hear the songs of the single mothers working hard to support a family, the songs of kids without a family who loves them, the songs of african americans singing songs of joy in this time of history being made.

  2. If he were alive he would hear the hard work of all the people trying to support there famlies. He would hear the sounds of people working hard to find were they belong in life.

We should not be ashamed of who we are we need to share it with the world.

  3. The reason that each person's should be "blithe and strong" is because we are each unique and should share that uniqueness without shame with everyone else.

Whitman would be hearing people today singing about the war, not being able to pay the bills, the stock market, panic, and the fact that the highest place in our country is now held by a black man.
