He is saying that people shouldnt be ashamed of who they are, or what they do. They should be proud of themselves, and shouldn't hide it from the world.
If he were still alive he would hear the songs of the single mothers working hard to support a family,the songs of kids without a family who loves them, the songs of african americans singing songs of joy in this time of history being made.
If he were alive he would hear the hard work of all the people trying to support there famlies. He would hear the sounds of people working hard to find were they belong in life.
We should not be ashamed of who we are we need to share it with the world.
The reason that each person's should be "blithe and strong" is because we are each unique and should share that uniqueness without shame with everyone else.
Whitman would be hearing people today singing about the war, not being able to pay the bills, the stock market, panic, and the fact that the highest place in our country is now held by a black man.

Mr. Williams teaches 11th and 12th grade English at Orem High School. He retired from Verizon as VP Business Development several years ago. Upon retirement he moved Utah and built a home in Alpine, Utah. He continued with his consulting work and returned to college earning his teaching license in English from UVU. He taught at Brighton High School before coming to Orem.
He has an accounting degree from BYU and an MBA from Butler university.

These people singing ARE the blithe and strong and they need to keep on working hard supporting their families and their country.
