Declaration of Independence

Using only the text - what evidence would you find that the Jefferson believed in or appealed to a supreme being?

  1. When he says, "that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights..." and "while evils are suffer able..." The reason that I chose the last one is because he refers to an evil so there must be good. Also with the fall of Adam mankind became an enemy of God.

  2. In the first paragraph he says "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God" he is saying that there is someone who is in control of things. Also when he says "that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights" he implies once again there is a supreme being.

  3. When he talks about "the Creator" giving them unalienable rights, also near the end of the Declaration, Jefferson talks about a "Supreme King above."
