Why do scholars classify literature into periods?
Relative to your period - what significant events spurred its beginning and ending?
How do you think literature is shaped by culture and history?
Tell me something about your chosen Outside Reading Book. What would you anticipate it being about? How many pages? Why did you choose this book?

-Fehrinheit 451 is about censorship and burning books. It is 173 pages. I like this book because it really makes you think about society, and is a good read.
Scholars classify literature in periods because like in history themes and events change peoples view or inspire ideas which in turn effect literature. The significant event that began the civil war era were the idea of equality between men and women, and black and whites. The end of the era's main event was General Lee's (confederate general) surrender to the union army or the end of the civil war. Literature is shaped by the culture or time that it is written in because people tend to focus on there issues because they relate to them. The book that i chose was Uncle Tom's Cabin which will probably be about the lives of blacks in the North during the Civil War, which is why i chose it.
ReplyDelete-The significant events that happened in my time was mostly about ending slavery, well fist Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Then the emancipation proclamation came out. (abolished slavery)
ReplyDelete-my outside reasing book is called Pudd'n Head Wilson. Well since my time period is about slavery and literary love wars i have a feeling it will be something on those lines.
The end of WWII was a the start of the time period. Technology advanced very quickly and people began thinking about more futuristic stories.
ReplyDeleteLiterature is shaped by culture because the people who write, are very influenced by their culture because its what they grew up knowing, so its what they are used to, so they write based upon knowledge they already have.
I chose The Outsiders because I have heard it is a very good and interesting book. It is about greasers, which seems like it could be very interesting and possibly action filled. I dont know how many pages it is.

* Yes literature is definatley shaped by culture and history. That's what makes it literature.
* The Autobiography of Benjamen Franklin is supposed to be really good at least that is what everyone is telling me. It is about 200 pages long and in an older style of english so it is hard to read. I chose this book because Mr. Williams said it was good and also because it is the only readable book that's at least 100 pages from the time period
I think scholars classify literature in to periods to make it easy to find and be organized.

the constitution was a huge part of early america. it along with the decloration of independence gave people their rights to be able to have freedom in the United States.
ReplyDeleteBecause people come from different cultures and from different back grounds and so when they write its going to be differnet from everybody else's so it brings something different to the table. and it makes it very interesting.
